How to wash waterproof socks without wrecking the membrane

A membrane fails from heat, abrasion and fabric softener long before it fails from age. Here is what actually shortens its life, and the wash routine that does not.

Wash cool, wash gentle

Heat is what kills a laminate. Cool wash, gentle cycle, inside a mesh bag if you have one.

What to keep away from them

Fabric softener clogs the pores the membrane breathes through. Bleach and tumble dryers do the rest.

Drying

Air dry, away from a radiator. A membrane does not need heat to dry, and heat is the thing most likely to end it.

Size guide

Measure the foot rather than relying on shoe size — sizing is not consistent across brands, and the foot length is what actually has to fit.

Size Foot length UK shoe
S 22.0 - 24.0 cm UK 3-5
M 24.5 - 26.5 cm UK 6-8
L 27.0 - 29.0 cm UK 9-11
XL 29.5 - 32.0 cm UK 12-14

How to measure

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel to a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe, and measure heel to mark.

Between two sizes

Between two bands? Take the larger one. These are a close, stretchy fit — a size down grips the toes and shortens the life of the membrane.
